Mandela: The Authorised Portrait

When PQ Blackwell asked us to design the Mandela Authorised Biography, we were honored and delighted. Having lived in Africa, we were able to confidently introduce an African design approach. This included the typography, a bespoke typeface, dramatic layouts, illustrative content, and impactful treatments to the imagery. The final design added impact and drama to this moving and memorable story.

Pae Whakatupuranga for Youth Horizons | Kia Pūawai

Pae Whakatupuranga, an initiative by Youth Horizons | Kia Pūawai is a Functional Family Therapy manual that integrates New Zealand’s Maori and Pasifika cultures and tikanga into the original American model. The principle behind the manual is the involvement of the family/whānau in the therapy and care of the individual at risk. Collaboration with cultural advisors ensured we handled the tikanga appropriately.

Thank you for the heart and soul you put into making Te Huarahi o Te Rangatahi such a special taonga, for understanding and translating our vague ideas into magic, and for the grace you showed under our pressured timelines. Everyone who sees it comments on how beautiful the book is. The design really is spectacular…and it makes people want to read the content. It’s even made people want to become Pae Whakatupuranga FFT therapists! So we can vouch for it - great design can be transformative.

Te Kohao o te Nigra for Youth Horizons | Kia Pūawai

Te Kohao o te Nigra (‘Through the eye of a needle’) is a tikanga that signifies the organisation’s shared commitment to the development of their culture. We worked closely with Youth Horizons Kaumātua Pita Te Ngaru to ensure the design enriched the readers understanding of their whakapapa and strengthened their commitment to building and evolving a bicultural kaupapa.
